Windows XP Hard Disk Maintenance and Cleanup
SAFE MODE
(please read the first paragraph before starting)
1. Start with your computer turned off
2. Turn on your computer and tap F8 until you see a menu asking to select a boot device.
3. Select Hard Drive by moving the arrow key down one space and hit "Enter".
4. Right away tap F8 again until you see a screen that lists SAFE MODE at the very top.
5. When you see SAFE MODE at the top of the screen, move the highlighted bar
until SAFE MODE is highlighted, then hit "ENTER". Hit "ENTER" again.
6. Select "Authorized User" by clicking on it.
7. A Message will come up saying that you are running in SAFE MODE.
8. Click on "YES" to continue.
Deleting Temporary Internet Files
1. Start
2. Click on Control Panel
3. Double click on Internet Options
4. From the general tab across the top go to Temporary Internet Files & single click on the
Delete Files. This brings up a box that you need to click (put a check mark) and say OK.
Then click OK at the bottom of screen.
5. Click on File of Control Panel and choose Close
Scandisk
1. Start
2. Programs
3. Accessories
4. System Tools
5. Disk cleanup
6. Click on Start
7. Once the scandisk is done, then defrag
8. After completing - results will come up - just click close.
Then close the scan disk windows and prepare to do disk defragmenter.
Disk Defragmenter
1. Start
2. Programs
3. Accessories
4. System Tools
5. Disk defragmenter (drive c should be highlighted)
6. Click on defragmenter (to start defragmenting)
7. Exit (when program is done running)
8. When done you can do a normal shutdown of the computer.
